THE FATE OF POOR GRADUATES SEEKING GRADUATE PROGRAMM ALL OVER THE WORLD
THE FATE OF POOR GRADUATES SEEKING GRADUATE PROGRAMM ALL OVER THE WORLD
Sometimes I wonder if the world is fashioned in such a way to
suffer the poor. Sometimes I wonder why the elites at all levels including
those in academics almost seems to think the same way. The issue of admission
is not new to most of us, especially those of us that had suffered some kind of
indirect defrauding and denier in our quest for a better life and
advancement.
I recalled with shock my experience in 2015, during my graduate
degree application to the University of Manitoba. I had completed my B.
Eng. Agricultural Engineering from Federal University of Technology Owerri with
a second-class honours, upper division (CGPA 3.61) and joined Imo State
Polytechnic as a graduate intern in August, 2014 which I completed
successfully, and with same zeal had aspired to complete a postgraduate
course in Biosystems Engineering to boost my career prospects.
Although, from the beginning, there was the problem of
finance until a friend volunteered to render a sponsor help and this
prompted me to approach the application with great zeal. It was my dream
to complete an M.Eng. course from Canada and the University of Manitoba became
my first choice. Unknown to me, my first choice University had a 'hidden'
requirement which was not known to me at that material time. I submitted all
the paper work, paid for my transcript and also my processing fee. To my
greatest surprise I was denied admission with the flimsy excuse "inability
to secure an advisor".
My point here is that some Universities know from unset that this
particular student might not be granted the admission but they will
still go ahead to collect application fee or processing fee, allowed you pay
for transcript. What is the need to require for
language proficiency score when the intending student had all
his undergraduate courses taught in English? There are issues that
are passive and should not be used to deny genuine applicants’ admission.
My submission is that, universities all over the world should make
their application process less cumbersome; like transcript requirement should be
after the person must have been granted admission or the university system
should through their internal communication with their counterpart universities
request for the candidates’ transcript without the knowledge of the applicant.
The CGPA score is enough to access the student performance at that level. This
will reduce the application cost in the side of the students who are even
hoping to secure scholarship to fund their admission.
Thanks.

THE STUBBORN CHILD WHO LATER BECOME AN ENGINEER
I am most proud of overcoming the adversity which I faced in my young life. I was a very stubborn child and fight often during my teen era. And my parents always flog me for any slightest misbehavior. One day, my Dad asked me to boil some eggs. I had put the pan over high heat and brought water to a rolling boil, for over 30 minutes my Dad was not forthcoming with the egg. About an hour he came with a sheet of paper with the largest zero mark on it, almost covering the whole paper. He called me, Onyekachi, "this is your nursery 2 result, see the egg, cook it". I failed while my younger brother passed.
It was not easy to get over my childhood traumas and find the courage to
pursue some dreams. But I found the courage, studied hard, and graduated as one
of the best eight in my department during my Bachelor's Degree. It was not an
easy period of life, but here I am, WRITING IN A BLOG POST TO SHARE MY EXPERIENCES TO THE REST OF THE WORLD. I am proud of being able to even get to this point. Let’s see
what’s next.
BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING STATEMENT OF PURPOSE, AN APPLICATION MADE BY ONYEKACHI CHUKWUNYERE EBOSI AT THE PURDUE UNIVERSITY APPLICATION PORTAL, 2021
Biomedical
Engineering: Purdue University
The
unfolding wonders between science and technology are not limited to time and
space. My aim in life is to accumulate this diverse knowledge from all over the
world. With this cherished goal in my mind, I wish to state in the following
paragraphs, my viewpoints and the rationale behind my application to the
graduate studies program in Biomedical Engineering at PURDUE UNIVERSITY.
Throughout
my school life, I have maintained a consistent and good academic record and was
always amongst the top four of my class. Coming to extra-curricular activities,
I was a good footballer and also participated at the state level. Aspiring for
the best undergraduate course that all good science students do and also
influenced by the fact that I come from a family of academics and scientists.
While the undergraduate courses enable a student to grasp the fundamentals
involved in a particular discipline of engineering, they do not present the
opportunity to learn the ropes with new technologies that are current within
the industry. Specialization becomes a necessity to understand new technologies
and to improve upon the existing ones. It is to achieve this sophistication
that I set out to pursue my graduate studies in Biomedical Engineering. During
my undergraduate final year project, I have done a project on the Design and
Fabrication of a Mini Biogas Digester for Production of Biogas Using Human
Feaca, through research and development, one of the courses in the final year.
This short stint has given me invaluable practical experience. It has given me
the confidence to pursue a direct Ph.D., degree and also kindled a desire to do
research. The undergraduate course in Instrumentation and Control Engineering
and the advice of widely respected teachers at the college has given me the
motivation to pursue a career in Biomedical Engineering.
During
this Covid19. Pandemic, the rate at which my country, Nigeria import medical
equipment abroad is alarming and this shows a lack of Biomedical Engineers in
the country that will produce these machines and medical equipment. And am here
to fill the gap within a short period of time.
The
sharing of ideas and new findings has always been a part of my undergraduate
life. Presentations and seminars were a perfect opportunity for me to explore
beyond the syllabus and were instrumental in giving me a competitive edge over
my peers. I relish a chance to indulge my creative side and gaining a deeper
understanding of my work in process of presentations. I enjoy diving into a
flood of data, picking out relevant information, and delivering it all to an
appreciative audience! Whatever I have achieved till now can be attributed to
my diligence and perseverance, which I have learned from my close-knit family
and culture. With the same indefatigable spirit, I am ready to utilize and
direct all my physical and mental abilities to achieve the same in my future
studies and research work.
I
bring along a strong grasp of fundamentals, an aptitude for teaching and
teamwork, a zest for challenges, and an enthusiastic desire to learn all I can.
In addition, I would like to take with me a network of strong and lasting
relationships that I maintain with my teachers and fellow students. I hope that
my qualifications and background are found suitable for Ph.D. in Biomedical
Engineering at the PURDUE UNIVERSITY.
Having
been enlightened by many professors and several graduating seniors about the
rigorous course work besides possessing state-of-the-art research facilities, I
had no dilemma in choosing PURDUE UNIVERSITY as my dream university for
pursuing my graduate studies. I am sure that the PURDUE UNIVERSITY with dynamic
faculty, well-equipped laboratories, and world-renowned graduate programs would
definitely help me in achieving my goals and contribute something of my own in
my field of interest – Biomedical Device Development with Industry Immersion. I
believe that with my capacity for hard work, commendable logic, and dedication
to achieve my goals, I will be able to do very well in my Graduate course. I am
sure that you will share my confidence and give me an opportunity to continue
with my further studies at your esteemed university.
Thanks.
Yours
sincerely,
Onyekachi
